EAA WILL HELP WITH YOUR ULTRALIGHT CREDENTIALS:
Are people begging you to teach them how to fly your ultralight aircraft? The Experimental Aviation Association (EAA) plans to offer enthusiasts working toward an ultralight instructor rating a special two-day course on March 18-19. The EAA has received an exemption from the FAA to designate qualified ultralight flight instructors who may provide training in two-place ultralights.

Warp Drive propeller hub failure!
During preflight I felt something while running my fingers over the prop and prop-hub. Upon closer inspection I realized it was a crack in the prop-hub, small enough to easily be missed. (Using touch during pre-flight can save your buns.) So, unfortunately, I had to scratch this flight.

Easy Riser back in production!
Larry Mauro, designer of the "Easy Riser" hang glider, has teamed up with Bill Lishman (Father Goose) to begin producing limited edition replica Easy Risers - as used by Lishman in his goose flight experiments - and award winning documentary C'mon Geese and the movie Fly Away Home.
Lishman and Mauro met at EAA AirVenture '99 and Mauro was impressed with Lishman's modifications, which include a clear wing covering and polished aluminum leading edge. The combination of polished metal ribs and the clear polyester covering gives the craft a look that combines modern technology with the bi-wing shape that is reminiscent of a Wright flyer. Lishman's modifications include an elevator, eliminating weight shift control. Lishman says the craft is a great flyer that meets all the requirements of a true Far Part 103 ultralight.
The planes will only be available as completed and test-flown aircraft with Mauro and Lishman personally signing each unit.
Only 25 craft will be produced, and part of the proceeds from the joint venture will help support Operation Migration Inc. a non-profit organization co-founded by Lishman which plans to lead a flock of Whooping Cranes by ultralight aircraft on a new migration route with the hopes of establishing a second (insurance) flock of this highly endangered bird.

Free Air Scoop for 503 Rotax  Rotax 503 Free Air Scoop

The kit includes an anodized Splitter vane, stainless fasteners and complete directions. The kit retails for $185.00
The new cowling features a flow-through design with a large exit ramp for increasing engine cooling in the tractor configuration. The 503 gains 2 hp and loses 6 lbs. when the fan and steel shrouds are removed. The new cooling has met Flightstar's goals of reducing cylinder head temperatures, cooling drag and maintenance requirements on the popular 54 hp Rotax 503.
The SuperCowl is finished in white epoxy primer that can be waxed and used as is or painted to match a plane. The 503 SuperCowl is now available to other OEMs and directly from Flightstar dealers as an aftermarket part.

Winter Tech Tip from Phil Esch - BFI

"These (teleflex) cables have been known to freeze up in flight due to moisture buildup inside the cable at temperatures below freezing."

On your maintenance schedule during this cold weather, make sure to check your push-pull cables on the elevators. Take the bolt off the elevator cable hinge to free the cable from the elevator and pull on each push-pull cable to make sure neither one is broken inside. Every 50 hours or so or if the elevator or aileron controls feel hard on the yoke, disconnect the cables at aileron horns on top and at the elevator connect point in back and pressure spray with lubricate like wd-40,liquid wrench, etc. the cables until you see the lubricate escape clear at the other end. At first you will see the liquid lubricate/solvent come out black. This will get rid of deposit buildup in the cable from wear. If the Cables feel hard on the yoke, please lubricate otherwiseyou could risk breakage. Also, this will minimize the cable freezing up on real cold flying days.

This tip was found at http://www.slowflight.com  and deals with teleflex cables used on the Tierra or T Bird ultralights - BUT many ultralights use teleflex cables for aileron and or elevator control, if yours does this advice should come in handy.
