Powered Parachutes are one of the, if not the, fastest
growing segment of ultralight aviation. Thus it was no surprise to see a
number of craft on display at the Toronto Aviation and Aircraft
show.
Sixchuter Canada East out of Wingham Ontario had a very
professional looking display at the show. Featured in the midst of
groups of flowers and a display tent were a number of aircraft set up on
display stands.
Sixchuter is one of the leading and most innovative
powered parachute manufacturers in the world. Their PPC are being flown
all over the world and have been used in a number of movies including a
recent James Bond film.
The Sixchuter line is distributed in Canada by Sixchuter
Canada East. The craft are available in a number of different models in
both single and two place aircraft, and in a agricultural spray version.
According to Sixchuter Canada East "powered parachutes are popular because, they are economical to own
and operate, easy to fly with flight training to solo in as little as 5
hours, easy to store and trailer.
In addition the Sixchuter line can be factory built ready
to fly or can be assembled using basic hand tools by a customer in as
little as 50 hours.
Once ready to fly, they can be flown from small grass
backyard fields, and stored easily the corner of a one car garage."
"Many of our customers, and people here at the shows
indicate that the kind of flying they do and most enjoy is just flying
around within 25 miles of home, sight seeing etc." "that is what
our aircraft are designed to do."
"the groundschool is a 1 day course" "and
people are usually ready to solo in 2 to 3 hours, with no previous flying
experience." "both of these cost a fraction of what they would
in a conventional training environment.!"
"Powered parachutes are one of the simplest forms of
flying there is" "in order to steer to the left you just push
with your left foot, to go to the right you push right" "up and
down is controlled by the throttle, as you advance the throttle you climb,
as you decrease it you descend, and in between the two is your cruise
power setting."
"This unit is powered by a 582 Rotax the average
climb and descent rate is about 600 feet per minute" "airspeed
is controlled by the size and style of canopy, with the average canopy
providing a 27 mph cruise speed" "fuel on board should give you
about 3 hours or 75 miles worth of range"
