Aircraft:
Lazair ultralight aircraft using the Rotax 185 engine with the Tillitson carburetor.
Problem area:
Carburetor
Incident report:
It has been reported a number of Lazair ultralight pilots that the nuts used to hold the
carburetor to the Rotax 185 engine on their Lazair ultralights have vibrated loose, causing the carburetor
to stop functioning resulting in loss of power and engine failure. In more than one
instance the carburetor has completely fallen off, and been retained by only the throttle
cable and fuel lines.
Suggestions:
Drill the retaining nut and stud and use safety wire to lock the nut. It is also
recommended that be Loctite be applied to the studs in as in one case after the nuts were safety wired
the studs vibrated out. Also check the nuts on a regular basis prior to flight.
