For the past number of years ultralight aviation enthusiasts visting
Sun N Fun have come across a Canadian company displaying an aircraft
designed and manufactured in India, by a well established hang glider
manufacturer, marketed through France - the X Air.
In the past the company's craft have been powered by Rotax engines.
This year the X-Air, that Speed Wing Aircraft had on display was powered
by a twin cylinder two stroke liquid
cooled, Italian engine the Simonini.
The Simonini engines have been built in Italy for nearly 15 years.
Currently they are available in 28, 48, 92, and 102 hp. When delivered
from the factory they come complete with dual ignition (on engines with
two cylinders), carb(s), exhaust, gearbox, fuel pump, radiator and
electric start.
The power 92 hp engine twin cylinder liquid cooled engines develops its
top horsepower at 6100 rpm, producing 170 KG of thrust, with a fuel
consumption of 9 litres per hour at 5200 rpm.
The single
cylinder engines are air cooled, and use a belt drive with the
larger engines being
liquid cooled, and equipped with
gear boxe. The engnes have a 500 hour or 1 year warranty. TBO
on the engine liquid cooled engines is 600 hours with the cost of
replacement parts running approximately $300.
There are reported to be over 100 aircraft currently flying on the
Simonini engines. These include a number of different trike, the Sky Fox,
