Propeller  protection for ultralights and ultralight aircraft. Wooden propellers are some of the most resilient and economical propellers that we can buy for out ultralight aircraft. Propeller manufacturers like Culver Props and Tennessee Props have been building props for ultralight aircraft for decades. But like anything else in life Mother Nature, age, neglect and abuse can play havoc with them. If your aircraft is equipped with a wooden propeller when you park it leave the prop in a horizontal position. This way the water in the prop will not run down to one end causing an in balance. At the first sign of peeling varnish sand, revarnish and rebalance the propeller. This will prevent rot from starting in the prop. Inspect your propeller carefully for cracks or damage before every flight. Any knicks should be repaired and the prop re-coated and balanced as soon as possible. Check your prop bolts for shearing, improper torque, or looseness. ESPECIALLY if your prop has a wooden hub. A wooden hub, or wooden prop expands and contract with moisture, heat, and cold, which of course effects the torque on your prop bolts. Once the prop has been installed and torqued properly safety wire the bolts. On floats make sure you have leading edge protection on the your prop, water hitting a prop is just like throwing stones through it. Ultralight Aircraft Propeller Tips: Be prepared to switch the engine off quickly if severe vibration occurs after a prop strike or failure. We have seen engines torn off their aircraft in flight after a prop failure! Repairing a prop is something you should do ONLY if your know what your doing! Any repair or modification can effect the strength, durability, and reliability of your propeller. Consult the prop manufacturer whenever you need to repair a prop!
